The 2nd IEA Unconventional Gas Forum in Calgary (Canada)

The 2nd IEA Unconventional Gas Forum was held on 26 March 2014 in Calgary (Canada). Dr. Małgorzata Woźnicka, head of Hydrogeological Risks Programme at Polish Geological Institute – NRI, attended the Forum to acquaint herself with the most recent engineering and legislative solutions for sustainable water management in the process of unconventional gas production.

International Energy Agency (IEA) hosted the Forum of which water management in the process of unconventional gas production was the main topic. The issues of water supply for hydraulic fracturing, the principles of sustainable water management and water protection against contamination were discussed in terms of both engineering and legislative aspects. Representatives of US and Canadian government administration presented regulatory solutions applied in that area and representatives of oil and gas companies presented technology solutions applied in shale gas production areas.

Solutions for flowback fluid treatment and potential for use of treated municipal wastewater for hydraulic fracturing were presented during the field trip to Dawson Creek (British Columbia).
